Why do I need domestic travel insurance?
Even though you may be covered for medical events by Medicare, there are still other unexpected events that could derail your travel plans, even when you’re exploring your own back yard. Your flight or cruise could be cancelled, you may have to return home early if a family member is taken into hospital, or your rental car could be damaged.
What does domestic travel insurance cover?
Our domestic travel insurance can provide cover for:
- Cancelling or changing your travel plans before you leave
- Changing your travel plans once you have left
- Luggage and personal items
- Rental vehicle excess
- Cash allowance whilst in hospital
- Pet care costs if you’re delayed getting home
- Childcare costs if you’re delayed getting home
- Funeral expenses
- Personal accident
- Personal liability
- Optional: Cruise cover

Does domestic travel insurance cover medical emergencies?
Our domestic travel insurance doesn’t cover medical expenses. To understand how you’re covered away from home for medical treatment and evacuation, contact Medicare or your private health insurer.
We will still ask that you disclose your pre-existing medical conditions (PECs) when you buy a domestic policy. This means that if you need to cancel or delay your trip due to a PEC, you’ll be covered for cancellation costs under your policy.
Cover for your furry friends
Whether you’ve got a playful pooch or a cuddly cat, it’s worrying when you can’t get home to your beloved pets. So, if an unexpected event delays your journey home, we’ll cover the extra daily costs of keeping your pets in a boarding facility, such as a kennel or cattery. We pay up to $50 for each day and up to $500 for each paying person.
We can cover claims if:
- An unexpected event delays your return home
- The pet boarding facility is a registered business
We don’t cover claims for:
- Any animals that don’t normally live with you at your home. We may ask you to provide evidence that an animal lives in your home, such as a microchip registration or a pet insurance policy
- Any daily fees you incur from the day after you return home
- Anything under ‘E. General exclusions — things we never cover’ in the Product Disclosure Statement
Cover for childcare expenses
It’s annoying when you can’t get home as planned. So, if an unexpected event delays your journey home, we cover the cost of any childcare you’ve already booked but can’t use and is not refundable. We pay up to $100 for each day and up to $500 for each paying person. This policy only covers the children receiving the care.
We can cover claims if:
- You’ve booked the childcare for after the date your journey was supposed to end
- The childcare facility is a registered business
- You can’t get a credit or refund for your booking
We don’t cover claims for:
- Any children that don’t normally live with you at your home
- Any daily fees you incur from the day after you return home
- Anything under ‘E. General exclusions — things we never cover’ in the Product Disclosure Statement
Our 10 most expensive domestic travel insurance claims
Since launching our policy in 2020, we can now reveal our ten most expensive claims received in the first year.
- A mum and two children had to return home early from their trip to Surfer’s Paradise when one of the children became extremely distressed as a result of being in a new and unfamiliar environment. The child’s autism was declared and covered as a pre-existing medical condition. (Claim paid - $6,043)
- During a trip to Mackay, in central Queensland, a 15-year-old was hospitalised with acute appendicitis which required surgery. The family had to cancel the remainder of their trip and return home early. (Claim paid - $4,685)
- A 47-year-old man fell off his bike on the first day of a six-day bike tour of the Apple Isle in Tasmanian and was unable to complete the remainder of his tour. (Claim paid - $4,536)
- A 65-year-old woman had to cancel her trip after a cycling injury meant she wasn’t unable to travel. (Claim paid - $4,021)
- After their cancer, unfortunately, returned a 56-year-old had to cancel their upcoming trip. (Claim paid - $3,339)
- A 24-year-old had to cancel their holiday after a workplace injury meant they could no longer travel. (Claim paid - $3,318)
- After falling off his horse during an alpine safari and fracturing his collarbone, the 75-year-old traveller was no longer able to continue the rest of his journey. (Claim paid - $3,256)
- When her six-year-old was hospitalised after being involved in a car accident, a 44-year-old mum returned home early from her trip to Cairns to be with her son. (Claim paid - $2,871)
- A travellers rental car was damaged after a Cassowary ran onto the road, during their trip to Cape Tribulation in northern Queensland. (Claim paid - $2,750)
- An 87-year-old returned home early from his trip after his wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. (Claim paid - $2,400.)
